AVP Pro Beach Updates

Top seeds May-Treanor/Branagh, Rogers/Dalhausser win their first two matches of the tournament, beating 32nd-seeded Kim Whitney and Carrie Wright, 21-13, 21-13 and toppling 17th-seeded Jennifer Snyder and Christal Morrison, 21-11, 22-20.

The top-seeded men’s team of Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser also swept their first two matches as they seek to defend their men’s title and win Huntington Beach for the fourth time in six years. They beat 32nd-seeded Ed Lunnen and Mike Nelson, 21-15, 21-13, and then dispatched the 17th-seeded team of Jonathan Acosta and Ty Loomis, 21-19, 21-13.

The Huntington Beach Open continues Saturday starting at 9 a.m. and runs through Sunday on the south side of the Huntington Beach Pier. Tickets are available on-site or at avp.com.

Newport Beach native April Ross and San Juan Capistrano ’s Jen Kessy, seeded second in the women’s bracket, appeared to be clicking on all cylinders Friday, as they won both of their matches easily. They beat 31st-seeded Sarah Day and Kristin Ursillo, 21-11, 21-11, and then 18th-seeded Kristen Batt and Brooke Sweat, 21-7, 21-11.

One significant upset did shake up the men’s side. Third-seeded Matt Fuerbringer and Nick Lucena dropped their first-round match, 21-16, 15-21, 20-18, to 30th-seeded Seth Burnham and Aaron Mansfield, and will have to battle all the way back through the contenders’ bracket if they hope to advance to the final. Burnham and Mansfield dropped their next two matches.
