Costa Mesa Weekend Road to the Battle of the Blues Harps

COSTA MESA, CA–On Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010 four blues harmonica based bands kick off the 2nd Annual Fall Concert Series at the Orange County Market Place, the weekend swap meet at the O.C. Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa. Admission to the swap meet and the concerts are free with a canned food donation to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County. Regular admission is $2. Children 12 and under are always free. Hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Location: 88 Fair Dr., Costa Mesa, CA

On Sunday, Sept. 26 the event features popular reggae band Common Sense.

Saturday’s entertainment marks the first leg of competition of the Road to the Battle of the Blues Harps in which 16 blues harmonica based bands will be vying for cash awards and the opportunity to be the opening act at the 22nd Annual Battle of the Blues Harps, Southern California’s longest running blues harmonica event presented by Southland Blues Magazine on Thanksgiving Eve in Long Beach.

Laguna Niguel based Satin Blue goes on at noon, Dave Bernal from Los Angeles at 1 p.m., Long Beach based White Boy James performs at 2 p.m. and Costa Mesa’s Roger Baldwin goes on at 3 p.m. A winner will be selected to perform and compete in the finals on Saturday, Oct. 23 at the Market Place against three other bands who win during other upcoming Battle dates: Saturdays, Oct. 2, 9 and 16. Four bands perform and compete each date.

Often considered Orange County’s favorite reggae band, Common Sense, will present two concerts on Sunday: noon and 2 p.m. An American reggae and alternative rock band from Orange County, they are known for playing in the Mercury Mariner commercial and at Warped Tour concerts to name a few. Since their formation in 1987 they have released five albums under their own label, Common Sense.

Other upcoming concerts, also free with a canned food donation, include Don’t Stop Believin’ a Journey tribute band on Sunday, October 3 at noon and 2 p.m., blues veteran and harmonica virtuoso Rod Piazza and his Mighty Flyers on Sunday, October 17 at noon and 2 p.m. and a special pre-Halloween concert with KISS tribute band, Gods of Thunder, on Saturday, October 30 at noon and 2 p.m.
