Old West Christmas, Tales With A Twist from Local Author

old west christmasHuntington Beach, Calif.–Just in time for your holiday gift buying, a book release that’s as good as gold was written by California Gold Rush author, Craig MacDonald. Originally researched stories and the artwork of Bill Anderson of Anderson Gallery in Sunset Beach provide glimpses into the way the Christmas holidays were celebrated over 150 years ago when the California Gold Rush was in full swing.

Do you think the parties in downtown HB go on too long? In Rich Bar in 1851 the Humboldt Saloon Bar was trimmed with red calico and the bowling alleys lined with white cotton cloth on Christmas evening. An oyster and champagne dinner launched the event, followed by toasts to Jesus and others. One woman named Louise said that people were dancing when she went to bed and they were still dancing when she woke up the next morning. The revel was kept up in this mad way for three days, growing wilder every hour, according to the woman.

Stories of hunger, longing, sadness, happy sharing and joy shed light on lives of ancestors who helped found California that we know today. Appropriate for all ages, easy to read, and as the title of the book states, twists with unexpected endings, all  make this a book worth reading, and even giving as a gift.

From Gold Rush Christmas holiday recipes to stories about Santa, a wedding, outlaws, and the first piano to arrive in a Gold Rush camp, the book, ” Old West Christmas, Tales With A Twist”,  is worth its weight in gold. Cost: $25. To purchase: Mail $25 check payable to: El Dorado Museums Foundation. Send to: Anderson Art Gallery, PO Box 1710, Sunset Beach, CA 90742. goldrushglimpses.com
