Huntington Beach Distance Derby

The City of Huntington Beach is hosting its 56th annual distance derby five or ten mile run on Saturday, October 23, 2010, beginning at 7 a.m. Runners will meet at Huntington Beach Pier Plaza (Main Street and Pacific Coast Highway), where you can sign in.

The popular city event supports some of Huntington Beach’s favorite causes such as Project Self Sufficiency. It is a program that helps low-income single parents to achieve economic independence. With a goal of gaining freedom from government assistance through education and training this program has helped primarily women who have entered it.

Project Self-Sufficiency began in 1985 when the city participated in the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s national Project Self-Sufficiency Program. The Huntington Beach program is one of the few remaining, and has since gained national attention because of its longevity and success.

Stroller/Skates/Dogs–Skates and dogs are not allowed! Strollers are permitted for the 5 mile walk only! Awards -Medals overall top 3 male and female; Medals 3 deep in each age group (no prize money)

Packet Pick up Info: You can pick up your bib number and shirt on Friday, October 22nd at the Edison Community center between 3pm & 7 pm. Edison Community center is located at 21377 Magnolia at the corner of Hamilton & Magnolia, across from Edison High school. You can also pick up your t-shirt & bib number on race day just north of the pier in pier plaza beginning at 6:00 a.m. The start line is located just north of the pier on the multi-purpose path.

Directions from: 405 Freeway – exit Beach Blvd., go west towards the ocean. When you get to Main Street, go right. Main takes you into the downtown area where you’ll find PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) – Take PCH to Main Street Huntington Beach at the Pier, Huntington Beach, California. Parking at the Beach– Walking distance from the start line could be anywhere from .1 to 1 mile depending on parking availability.

From Main Street, at 6th Street, Orange or Olive, go right or left and begin looking for residential/street parking. Parking meters are enforced. No participant parking is available in the Pier Plaza Parking lot at 6th and PCH. Paid parking is available in the parking structure located off Walnut (Main street to Walnut, go left, parking structure on the left and right). The structure is located 2 blocks from the event site.

Cost: 10 or 5 Mile: $25 thru 10/10/10; $30 from 10/11/10 thru 10/21/10; Surf Kids Fun Run: $15 thru 10/10/10; $20 from 10/11/10 thru 10/21/10. Registration: 10 Mile Run – 7am; 5 Mile Run followed by the 5 mile walk – 8:30 am; Surf Kids “fun runs” at 1 mile, ½ mile and ¼ mile – 10am.
